PT BNI Life Insurance has managed to keep the health claim ratio below 100% even though the life insurance industry is experiencing a significant increase in the health claim ratio.
According to data from the Indonesian Life Insurance Association (AAJI), in the first semester of 2023, the ratio of life insurance health claims to premium income reached 103.7%. This trend continued in the first semester of 2024 with an increase in the claim ratio to 105.7%.
Acting President Director of BNI Life Neny Asriany revealed that the company managed to maintain a health insurance claim ratio of 90% until the first semester of 2024. “As of the first semester of 2024, BNI Life's health insurance claim ratio is 90%,” Neny told Bisnis on Monday (2/9/2024).
Neny explained that the surge in health claims did not only occur at BNI Life, but almost all insurance companies. The main factor causing this increase in claims is medical inflation, including the cost of laboratory tests, medicines, and health care. In addition, climate change that tends to be extreme also contributes to the increase in health claims, as health problems occur more frequently.
“These high health claims have caused losses to the health insurance industry. As a result, some insurance companies have decided to no longer market health insurance products,” added Neny.
Neny hopes that regulators and the government can create policies that regulate the healthcare ecosystem, including maintaining the stability of medical costs and addressing service disparities between hospitals. This is important to help the health insurance industry survive the challenges it faces.
