Hidden Virus: What You Need to Know About Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV)
10 Jan 2025

Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a significant respiratory pathogen first identified in 2001. It primarily causes acute respiratory infections, especially in children. The virus can lead to a range of symptoms, from mild upper respiratory infections to severe conditions like bronchiolitis and pneumonia. In Indonesia, hMPV is a growing concern due to high rates of respiratory infections among children, contributing to hospitalization and mortality rates.

hMPV has a global distribution with seasonal patterns. In Indonesia, it is frequently detected during specific months, particularly in the rainy season. Research indicates that hMPV can account for up to 10% of acute respiratory infection cases, with higher prevalence in children under two years old. The virus can also infect adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.

The symptoms of hMPV infection are similar to those caused by other respiratory viruses and may include:

  1. Cough
  2. Shortness of breath
  3. Fever
  4. Mild flu-like symptoms

The effects of hMPV infection vary significantly. In children, especially those with underlying medical conditions, it can lead to prolonged hospital stays and serious complications such as pneumonia. In adults, particularly the elderly or those with chronic lung diseases, hMPV can also result in severe complications.

Currently, there is no specific treatment for hMPV infections. Care is generally supportive and focuses on symptom management. Key preventive measures include good hygiene practices such as regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.Vaccines for hMPV are still under research and are not commercially available yet. Therefore, increasing awareness about preventive measures through vaccination against other pathogens like RSV can help reduce the overall burden of respiratory diseases.

With the rising incidence of respiratory infections like hMPV in Indonesia, considering health or life insurance becomes increasingly important. Health insurance can provide financial protection against medical care costs, while life insurance may be a consideration for families with vulnerable members at risk of severe illness from hMPV or other pathogens. Investing in health insurance not only protects individuals but also offers peace of mind for families facing unexpected health risks.
