Congo Hemorrhagic Fever: A Deadly Outbreak You Should Watch Out For!
03 Feb 2025

The Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus is an outbreak with a mortality rate of approximately 40%. The virus originates from ticks, as well as the blood and fluids of infected animals, and is transmitted through direct contact, particularly affecting vulnerable groups. This disease has spread across Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Asia.

  1. Early Symptoms
During the first 1-4 days, symptoms include high fever, muscle aches, headaches, neck pain, sore throat, and digestive issues such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

  2.  Advanced Stage
This stage requires medical supervision, as patients may experience liver changes and even depression. Excessive drowsiness and an enlarged liver causing pain in the upper right abdomen are also common.

  3. Hemorrhagic Symptoms
After day 4, patients may develop petechial rashes due to bleeding beneath the skin. Unexplained bruising, severe nosebleeds, and bleeding in areas of trauma, such as injection sites, may also occur.

  4. Complications
At this stage, the virus triggers secondary diseases, such as kidney failure, liver failure, and lung failure. This stage can be fatal, with a mortality rate of around 10-40% of total cases. Treatment involves the antiviral drug ribavirin, though its effectiveness is limited.
